Transoceanis
Meritxell Colell, Lucía Vassallo
Spain – Argentina / 2020 / 116’
Meritxell y Lucía are two filmmaker friends who met in 2012 in a staging room and work together afterward in three films. Separated by an ocean -–Meritxell in Barcelona y Lucía in Buenos Aires– they start writing letters to each other and sending images in which they gather intimate experiences, every day or abstract reflections, and the not to be missed doubts that assault creative processes, their periods of drought and their revelations. Along the process, it organically gives way to questions about maternity, family, and love.
Transoceánicas exists because of the cinema and because of that inherited certainty -as the filmmakers admit- from Jonas Mekas, that anything or experience, even the smallest, can be turned into material for a film. Between the uncertainties of these two women, the time that goes by, and the space that separates them, cinema becomes that place where they can find that communication and honesty that are sorely missed in life. In a present where the mandate is separation and isolation. Transoceánicas asserts the need and desire for contact and bonding.
