Looking for Horses is a movie about friendship. It is the story of the relationship between the director and a fisherman that went deaf during the Bosnia war and retires to a lake to live in isolation. The director, son of Bosnian parents, fights for getting close again to his mother tongue, which he has lost in a languages’ spiderweb that mixes and that originate the stutter. Beyond the speech and hearing limitations, the film is the establishing of a bond among generations through language, by sharing their world in the surroundings of a lake full of big fish, wild horses, wide silences, and dangerous storms. While for the fisherman the lake represents his retreat from a fractured country, his abandonment of war, for the filmmaker means precisely the return to that broken place, the searching for his parents. They seek communication means, while the camera strengthens their bond. Looking for horses is a poetic documentary about trauma, survival, and connection.
