The silent land
Mario Ruiz
Colombia / 2021 / 7’
Taking film archive with an undetermined date (between 1935 and 1938) and location (perhaps Colombia, Peru, or Ecuador), director Sergio Ruiz addresses farmers’ labor, between their deep connection to the land and the precarious and abusive conditions they have put up with. An arduous day at the potato plantation in Andian territory is the opportunity to behold an old film archive that is revisited, reinterpreted, and focalized by the poetic sieve of the director. We attend a short lecture on how to display unknown -and somewhat mysterious- material in a way that keeps lyricism while denouncing historical debts, still ongoing, with Latin American farmers.
